Perth Mart Loss: MP's Alarm

Commenting after news on 17 June that United Auctions (UA) is to press ahead with amalgamating the Perth Mart and Stirling Agricultural Centre, Pete Wishart MP, said: “It was most disappointing to hear confirmation of this news. For many, Perth Mart is the very heart of Perthshire’s agricultural tradition and economy.”
He continued: “Perth’s long history as a market town in the very centre of Scotland has made it an ideal place for the trading of livestock and it would be a tragedy for this historical link to be broken.

Crushing loss
“Although United Auctions have reassured us that this decision will bring no personnel changes, the Mart in itself is an important link in Perthshire’s economic structure. Despite news of no jobs being lost in the amalgamation, the loss to the Big County will be crushing.
“I will certainly be seeking to meet with representatives of UA to discuss the basis of this damaging decision.”
