Cycle Event: Presbytery Call for Legal/Political Action

The Cycle Run proposed for Sunday 24 June in Highland Perthshire and the associated proposed road closures were discussed at the Presbytery meeting of Dunkeld and Meigle held at the Tryst in Pitlochry on 17 April.

While the problems created for local Churches were mentioned - with worshippers being unable to attend Church - what was equally important was the fact that many members of the community in that area were going to be virtual prisoners in their own homes for a large part of that day, and that many local businesses would suffer financially.

It was felt that such road closures would be a severe restriction on the civil liberties of very many people living in the area.  Accordingly Presbytery decided in the following terms:

Presbytery:

1 Notes with great concern the possible closure by Perth and Kinross Council of 83 miles of public roads in Highland Perthshire on Sunday 24/6/07 for a long period of time, causing the loss of the right of people to worship and loss of freedom of movement by all sections of the community in the affected area.

2 Urges all congregations and Church members to join with other members of the community in taking all legal and political steps to prevent these road closures

and instructs the Clerk to write to the Council in these terms.

John Russell, Clerk to the Presbytery of Dunkeld and Meigle
