Huge Population Increase Expected for Perth & Kinross

05 February 2010

The Registrar General has revealed that Scotland’s population is due to increase by 7% over the next 25 years, meaning that there will be 5.5 million people living in Scotland by 2033.

The forecasts indicate that the Perth and Kinross area is one of the most popular and desirable places to live in Scotland.

While the increase is expected to be unevenly spread, P&K is set to experience one of the largest growths in residents.

Registrar General Duncan Macniven also calculated that P&K is to see a large increase in the number of children in the area, with the number of 0-15 year olds rising by 24%, the second largest rise in Scotland.

Planning Need

Commenting on this, MSP Murdo Fraser said: "Perth & Kinross must be ready for this increase in population, and planning must take place now to improve our infrastructure so we can deal with this population boom. Issues such as the requirement of more local amenities, more schools and more services need to be planned out.

"I will continue to work hard in the Scottish Parliament to make sure that Perth and Kinross is ready for the challenges that lie ahead."
