Recent Obituaries: January 2008

Linda Anderson

Linda Anderson passed away 10 January after a 14 month battle with Cancer.

Linda’s son, Steven Dalton, writes: “As well as being a wonderful mother, she was also my best friend and business companion, who played a vital role in the running of our family business, Steven's of Pitlochry, both in Pitlochry and our Perth branch. I have no words to express the feelings of her loss, and am sure she will be missed by a lot of our customers, who over the years, became more like friends.
“I would like to thank and acknowledge all those who attended my mother’s funeral to pay their respects as well as those who have shared our loss by visiting both shops. I know my mother would have wanted our business to strive forward as we had planned and to share those plans with our customers.
“My heartfelt thanks also go to all the staff at Roxburghe House, Dundee, who cared for my mother throughout her ordeal and who also gave comfort when needed. My gratitude goes to them for all their kindness, care and attention in every way imaginable, and for making my short stay welcoming, as if I was at home. On the day of my mother’s funeral, a collection was made for Roxburghe House totalling £600. A further huge thank you to all those concerned.”

'Ford' Carruthers

Rutherford (Ford/Fordie) Carruthers was born on the 24 January 1934 in Garth Cottage, Moulin and he died, peacefully in PRI on 11 January, after a brave and uncomplaining fight against Parkinson’s disease.
He attended Pitlochry High School till the age of fifteen and then embarked on a career as an apprentice radio engineer with the local firm of R. W. Bell. In 1959 he joined Lowden Bros. & Co. Engineers Ltd as Retail Manager & Contracts Manager in the Arbroath branch. Subsequently, he was in charge of all the retail outlets in Angus & Dundee till 1972.
In 1964 he married Marianne and the family grew in 1965 when Stephen was born, followed by Judith in 1968 & Andrew in 1971. He was a keen sportsman in his younger days playing cricket, football and golf. In 1972 he became a director of R.W. Bell (Electrical) Pitlochry Ltd and the owner of R. Carruthers (Electrical) Ltd. – its retail division. He Joined Expert UK Ltd. and was Chairman for three years from 1978 to 1981. He then served as Chairman of Expert International for six years till 1985. He established Novafon Direct Marketing in 1986.
He was also Chairman of the Highland Perthshire Development Co. Ltd. and of Heartland FM. From 1985-87 he served as a small business Counsellor with the Scottish Development Agency. He was a member of the Scottish Council of the Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind and served on the Board of Perth College. He was the area representative for the Electrical Contractors Association and was President from 1991-93.
Always interested in dramatics, he was involved with Pitlochry Festival Theatre from its outset and was a Society member. He served on the Pitlochry Tourist Committee, the Mercantile Association, the Highland Games and a past President of the Rotary Club. Unfortunately, his frequent business trips meant he could not meet the attendance requirements and he had to resign. He was a member of Pitlochry East Church and then Abbey Church in Arbroath where he was an elder. On returning to Pitlochry, he rejoined the East Church and then after the amalgamation, Pitlochry Church of Scotland where he enjoyed the fellowship of ‘locals’ and ‘incomers’ alike.
For his last few months he attended the Tryst Day Care Centre where he very much appreciated the care and kindness shown by all the staff and helpers, and was full of praise for all the community services which provided health care and aids to make his life more comfortable.
The packed church in Pitlochry at the celebration of his life on 18 January heard him described as: “a very special husband, Dad, Grandpa and friend – a good man, a brave man, a fair man, a gentle man, a clever man, a witty man and a modest man who touched so many lives. He will be very sorely missed.”
