Water Charge Exemptions Welcomed by MSP

Following the announcement that charities, churches and voluntary organisations are to be exempt from paying water charges, MSP John Swinney, Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth, expressed his delight at the removal of a threatened burden.

He remarked: “It is excellent news that the Scottish Government are to ensure small charities, churches and voluntary organisations will be exempt from paying water charges.

“This has been an issue that has been going on for a number of years and I have vigorously opposed any efforts to impose charges.

“I have heard many people express concern on this issue over a considerable period of time, and I know many of my constituents will be delighted at this news.

“The Scottish Government has laid out its principles, which have been formed by essentially listening to the views of the people and groups affected.

“It is important that we allow communities to have groups which are not crippled by excessive charges or put off carrying out their work and activities.

“I have no doubt the people of Angus and Perthshire will welcome this news.”
