Highland Chef Final

In mid May three Breadalbane Academy pupils had the chance to show off their culinary skills when they cooked and served their winning recipes at the ‘Inn on the Tay’ in Grandtully for 60 paying guests.

The school hosted a ‘Highland chef’ competition for all the S2 pupils last term and one of the many prizes was for the three winners to get the chance to cook their winning dishes in an industrial kitchen and serve it to the public.

Examples of the dishes were Risotto with Garlic and Chilli Honey Prawns, Tranche of Salmon on a bed of Citrus Leeks and for dessert White Chocolate Bread and Butter pudding with a Hot Fudge Sauce.

The competition was a great success with Grace Smith being the overall winner, Kane Hippersley-Gatherum coming second and Chloe Bennett achieving third place. The judges were Chef Lee Patrick from the Inn on the Tay at Grandtully, Chef Ashley Miles from Fortingall Hotel, Norma Lindsay, the General Manager from the Weem Hotel and Donna Trail from Fayre and Square in Aberfeldy.

The evening was reckoned to be a huge success and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.   The pupils started working in the kitchens at 9.30am and finished 12 hours later, tired but extremely exhilarated.

Afterwards, Kane said “It was a great experience; I would definitely do it again.”

Grace added: “It was an amazing experience, it was so fun and I would definitely do it again.”

And Chloe added “I enjoyed it thoroughly and I would be glad to have the opportunity to do it again.”

All pupils reckoned that it was fantastic team work in the kitchens of The Inn on the Tay and saw it as an opportunity of a lifetime.    The whole atmosphere of the day was so liberating and exciting, they felt, and as it was a 12 hour shift they catered for 60 people, but it was such a buzz and gave them a great sense of achievement.

Well done to Kane, Chloe

and Grace.
