Breadies' First Marches on in May

Strathmore & Perthshire Division 1
Breadalbane vs Perth Northern
Doo’cot Park - Perth on 10 May

Perth Northern, confident of putting the frighteners on the Breadalbane juggernaut, won the toss and confidently invited the Highland Perthshire men to bat.

Twenty eight overs then passed before the scoreboard indicated any wickets lost. This year’s already impressive opening pair, Platts and Hardy, accumulated 108 runs before Northern stalwart Dougie Gourlay dislodged Hardy’s bails for a well compiled 56.
Andrew Lawson joined Platts, the pair steadily drove the score along to 198 when Platts was caught and bowled for a formidable 82. Lawson finished on 37 no, Chris Eyes chipped in with 12 no, the Breadies finishing on 216 for 2.
By the time Northern faced their 10th over 5 wickets had fallen and the Perth men were looking to the heavens for deliverance. They might well have looked skywards as the firmament was filling with some very serious black clouds. Surely the Breadies would not be cheated victory by the gathering storm. The rain clouds seemed to reignite some inner determination in the Northern ranks as all of a sudden wickets became harder to find. Northern showed some fight and, despite the best efforts of Breadalbane’s wily skipper for the day, Mark Bridgeman, clung tenuously to the crease for a further 28 overs.
Alas the rain did not prove to be the Perth side’s salvation, at least not until the teams had just left the oval when the heavens opened. Breadalbane had won their second game in a row by an impressive margin of 108 runs. Eyes was the pick of the Breadalbane bowlers conceding just 11 runs from 9 overs for 3 wickets.
