Breadies' Seconds' Nailbiter Setback
Strathmore & Perthshire Division 2
Breadalbane vs Rossie Priory
Victoria Park - Aberfeldy on 11 May
The Breadalbane attack ground away against old rivals Rossie Priory on the Aberfeldy park having to work hard for meagre rewards. All the Rossie top order scored runs and threatened a total of test match proportions and were only just about kept in check by the Breadie bowlers.
A great spell by youngster Joe Grace early on earned him two prize scalps and figures of 2 for 23. Two Rossie old stagers, Peter Milne and Peter Stewart, found themselves together at the crease and in no mood to be dislodged, they put on 86 before the thirteen year old prodigy Jason Adams trapped Milne lbw. Jason accounted for another batter and returned excellent figures of 2 for 13. This however didn’t include a sensational run out by the young man from a direct hit.
Rossie finished on exactly 200 for 9 wickets
What was to follow was scintillating cricket. Breadalbane had slumped to 129 for 8 in the 39th over and the game seemed over. The only resistance of any note had come from never-say-die veteran and scrapper Dave Delph who hit a belligerent, near-career-best, of 42.
Kyle Hardy batting at no 10 joined Ollie Platts, in at number 9, renewing their illustrious partnership of the previous day. In just 4 overs the pair added 55 runs and moved Breadalbane to the brink of a sensational and unlikely victory.
With 11 balls remaining and just 17 more runs required Hardy launched the ball into the stratosphere, but with an almost vertical inclination, and there was a nervous Rossie fielder waiting beneath it. The whole of Victoria Park held its breath... The ball crashed into the young fielders’ hands and there it stubbornly remained. Hardy left the park, a gallant 42 to his name from just 19 balls faced. Breadalbane’s last wicket fell with 188 runs on the board signalling a brave defeat for the Highland Perthshire men by a margin of just 12 runs.
