Schools Slalom Trophy for Breadalbane

For the first time ever, Breadalbane Academy brought the Scottish Schools Canoe Slalom title home to Tayside. Previous winners have been Fife, Borders & Central, in fact this is the first time this century that the title has been won by any school other than Denny High (Central).

The competition took place at Alva on the River Devon at the permanent slalom facility operated by local club - CR Cats. Many parents and friends were there to support the team and the event, which attracted paddlers from as far away as Aberdeen and Selkirk. It was a fantastically close competition with Breadalbane narrowly beating Denny on points.

The Breadalbane team (pictured above) consisted of Geordie Broad, Jacob Holmes, Anna Bryson, Jed Sloan, Struan & Benjamin Macdonald, Jack Christian, Findlay Dougall and Cameron Revell.
Breadalbane Canoe Club’s Jude Girling and her team of dedicated coaches was the springboard the Scottish Canoe association (SCA) needed to initiate a pilot project here in 2007. The success of this project has led to the SCA employing Stephen Macdonald as the Tayside Regional Development Coach based at Grandtully with the remit of developing participation and performance in Slalom.
Training programmes with the Tayside Development Squad run for three levels: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced with paddlers progressing through these levels. The introductory level will offer one day of coaching per week with the expectation that participants will take part in two or three competitions throughout the season. Anyone with an interest is welcome to take part and should contact: Stephen.macdonald@canoescotland.com or call 01887 829419
