Girls Make the Kwik Cricket Running

The growth of cricket in Highland Perthshire was evident on Monday 16 June as more than 60 pupils from the various schools in the Northern part of Perthshire, vied for this popular trophy at the 4th Annual Highland Perthshire Kwik Cricket Festival at Victoria Park, Aberfeldy.

This year the previous winners (Breadalbane Academy) were unable to compete due to clashing commitments. This enabled the spotlight to fall on Grandtully School who picked up the Trophy, played for by P5/6 pupils, for the first time.
The competition is organised by Breadalbane Cricket Club and the Highland Perthshire Sports Trust, who, together with the local schools, aim to give children of all ages the chance to play cricket and enjoy themselves at the same time.

The Cricket Club’s vice captain, Mark Bridgeman, and Perth & Kinross Cricket Development Officer, Andrew Lawson, are pictured presenting the trophy to the victorious Grandtully School team. “The most amazing thing”, commented Mark Bridgeman, “was the number of girls who wanted to compete. They’re certainly giving the boys a run for their money these days!”
A Round Robin tournament for the younger kids, was aso played simultaneously with a strong showing from all the teams. “ Watch out next year,” said Mark Bridgeman, “the younger ones had their eyes on the trophy!”
